Beginning to search for that dream job is always a daunting process, no matter what industry you’re in. The hospitality sector in particular is one of those industries that requires candidates to demonstrate their skills and ability while on the job. So, how do you articulate yourself appropriately before landing that infamous interview or trial?
In order to showcase those skills, here are our top tips to ensure you’re ready to land that interview from the get-go.
1. Know what you are applying for.
There’s nothing worse than walking into a venue and asking to speak to someone regarding potential work, and not knowing who they are and what they do. This happens more often than you’d think! To avoid looking unprepared, do some research on who they are, what they do, and ask yourself why you want to be there.
If you are applying for a role online, read the advertisement fully. All the information is generally covered in the job advertisement, so scope out who they are and what they want fully before asking any questions. Take responsibility for your own application, and be proactive on your approach. Remember, this is your first impression, so make it count!
2. Your hospitality resume is cleanly formatted and organised.
Make sure your resume and cover letter are organised, easy to read and up to date. Enter previous work in chronological order with specific dates, clear responsibilities and make sure your references have job titles and correct contact details. Getting the simple things right helps make that first impression count!

3. It’s all in the detail.
Double and triple-checking resumes is a tedious process, but you’d be surprised how many mistakes are made when writing. To avoid making these grammatical or spacing errors, have someone check over everything you’ve written with fresh eyes. Even printing it out or reading sentences aloud helps. 4. Be professional.
Take time composing messages to your potential employer. A lot of businesses in the hospitality industry work on referrals from friends of former colleagues, but it is important to be professional in any communications you compose. Whether you respond to a job ad on Facebook or you are writing an email to an employer, make sure to introduce yourself, include the subject of your query and use professional language throughout. Avoid abbreviations and slang - being overly casual doesn’t come across as dedicated and hard-working, just lazy!
5. Match the skills you have with what they want.
Chances are you have the skills your next employer needs, but it hasn’t been articulated in quite the right way in your cover letter or resume. Match the language of their job advertisement in the description of your skills. This helps both you and the employer: they know the key skills they’re searching for, and you’re showing you not only have them, but that you understand who you’re applying for. Using this language in the interview as well is a great way to demonstrate your understanding of the job role, and how you can benefit their team.
